Since January 2008, U.S. travelers are required to show passports for all international travel.

1.- Normal process:

  • Time to obtain passport: six weeks.

If your passport has expired and it is not damaged:
You may mail your old passport to the National Passport Center, Box 371971, Pittsburgh, PA 15250-7971. Send two passport photos and the amount (67) by check or money order.

You may obtain application forms from local post offices, or you may download a renewal application form from the government website (

If your Passport has been stolen, damaged or lost:
You must attend in person at your local travel authority -superior court, post office, etc.- and present an original or certified copy of your birth certificate and/or Social Security card in order to establish your citizenship. In case you were born outside the U.S. and you are an American citizen, be sure to check the government website ( for details on how to identify yourself as an American citizen.

2.- Expedited Service:

  • Time to obtain passport: two weeks
  • Cost: $67 USD plus additional fee $60
  • Total cost: $127 USD

In a rush?
For particularly quick passport service, there are various independent companies specialized in obtaining passports for emergency situations. There are three companies: listed at the National Association of Passport and Visa Services: Official Travel Documents, Passport Express, and These are private services and fees vary depending on each company; the delivery time of passports is within 3 days.

3.- Passport Card:

  • Cost: $45 USD (first time applicant) and $20 (previous passport holder)
  • Time to obtain passport card: four to six weeks. (Expedited service with additional cost).

The U.S. Passport Card can be used to enter the United States from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Bermuda at land border crossings or sea ports-of-entry and is more convenient and less expensive than a passport book.
